Washing machine repair
A washer full of water or one that won't spin is usually a fixable problem: a pump, a lid switch, a belt or a control issue.
Common washer problems
- Won't drain: clogged drain pump filter (on many front-loaders there's an access door at the bottom front), kinked drain hose, failed pump
- Won't spin: unbalanced load, lid switch or door lock, worn belt or motor coupling, suspension issues
- Leaking: door boot seal (front-load), hose connections, pump, or oversudsing from too much detergent
- Won't start: door not latched, control lock engaged, power or outlet problem, control board
- Smells musty: residue in the door boot and dispenser. Run a cleaning cycle and leave the door open between loads
Try this first
- Check the drain pump filter (front-loaders). Put down towels; water will come out.
- Redistribute the load and try a drain/spin cycle.
- Use HE detergent in the right amount. Too much causes sudsing errors and leaks.
- Check the hoses behind the machine for bulges or cracks. Hoses older than about five years are worth replacing with braided ones.
When to call
Repeated error codes, grinding noises, a door that stays locked, or leaks you can't trace are good reasons to bring in a technician. Write down the brand, model number (inside the door or on the back) and any error code.
