Quick checks before you call
- Power: is the appliance plugged in, and has a breaker or GFCI outlet tripped? Kitchen and laundry outlets are often GFCI-protected.
- Water: for washers, dishwashers and ice makers, are the supply valves fully open, and are hoses kinked?
- Filters: clogged dishwasher filters, dryer lint screens and refrigerator water filters cause many "it stopped working" calls.
- Door switches: many appliances won't run if the door doesn't latch fully.
- Error codes: write down any code on the display. It helps the technician bring the right part.
Repair or replace?
A common rule of thumb: if the repair costs more than about half the price of a comparable new appliance, and the appliance is past the middle of its typical lifespan, replacement may make more sense. High-end built-in refrigerators and ranges are usually worth repairing. See our appliance repair cost guide.
What to ask when scheduling
- Is there a service-call or diagnostic fee, and is it credited toward the repair?
- Do you work on my brand and model? (Have the model number from the label ready.)
- What warranty do you offer on parts and labor?
- Is the appliance still under the manufacturer's warranty? If so, the manufacturer may require its own authorized service.
